It works - it gets a lot right. What's in focus is framed by what is out of focus, but that's typical of these sorts of pictures. What I really like is the white/dark contrast, and the contrast in the detail: the darker portions use a more vigorous line than the flowers themselves. The subject is slightly off-center and there's a feeling that this is an ocean of some sort, or flowers floating on darkness, and the extreme background with its fuzzy, complementary colors aids that feeling.
